What changed between the demo and the full release

If the demo put you off, the useful question is narrow: was your problem fixed. The developer answered that a piece at a time, scattered across 38 Steam threads and their Discord. Every answer they gave is below, in their words, with the thread attached.

20 stated differences, by how firm the claim is

  • 6 stated fixed
  • 9 deliberately changed
  • 4 promised, not dated
  • 1 claimed fixed, disputed

Nothing here has been verified in the release build, because nobody outside the studio has played it yet. Stated fixed means the developer said so. Disputed means players reported the same failure afterwards.

The single most useful thing the developer has said about the demo is that they deliberately stopped working on it:

“we know, nearly every bug is already fixed, but we focus on delivering bug-less full release in stead of fixing demo”

What is out there

How to read a claim like “fixed in full version”

It is not evasive — the studio has been unusually direct — but it is a statement about a build nobody outside the studio has run. One item above was announced as fixed and then reported again by players, which is the normal shape of a physics bug rather than evidence of anyone lying.

The one to watch is the boat destroying itself. It has the longest thread, the most reports, and the most confident fix announcements. If it survives into 1.0 it will be the first thing anyone writes about. There is a full breakdown of the triggers if you want to know what to avoid in the meantime.

What is still unanswered

Some questions have no right-hand column because nothing was ever said in reply. Clearing algae off the hull was asked in the “boat won’t move?” thread; how the rudder and propellers are maintained, and switching the microphone device, were both raised inside longer threads that moved on without addressing them. They are not in the list above because there is nothing to put opposite them.

Demo and release, in short

+Is the Water You Doing? demo the same as the full game?

No. The developer stated in the official Discord that they stopped patching the demo in order to ship a clean 1.0, so demo bugs are mostly fixed-but-unshipped rather than unsolved. They also describe the demo build as far less optimised than the release.

+Was the boat explosion bug fixed for the full release?

The developer marked it fixed twice, first with Hotfix #5 and later with a note saying they had found the cause, and on 25 August named the cause outright: item physics against boat physics, where a 1 kg object could throw a 4,000 kg boat. Players did post the same failure after the Hotfix #5 announcement. Until someone plays 1.0, treat all of it as claimed fixed rather than verified.

+Does the full release have controller support?

The demo has none. For the release, the developer said it will and the store listing carries Full controller support along with DualShock and DualSense — that is the listing’s claim, not a tested result, because nobody outside the studio has played 1.0.

+Did they fix the one-item carrying limit?

They changed it rather than removed it. The developer says the release build adds much more storage space on the boat and lets you pick scrap straight up into it instead of carrying it by hand.
