How the harpoon works
The single most common misunderstanding about this game: the harpoon does not shoot things. It grabs the world and pulls your boat toward it. Once that clicks, it stops being a curiosity and becomes how you steer.

What it actually does
It winches the boat, it does not fire a projectile at enemies
One creator said it plainly after firing it for the first time: he thought it was “just going to shoot a little harpoon out of it”, and instead it hauled the entire boat. Another worked it out from the trailer — you harpoon yourself into places.

It is how you make a turn the rudder cannot
The boat carries momentum and turns slowly. Firing a harpoon at a rock on the inside of a bend drags the bow round far faster than the wheel will. Crews use it for sharp turns and for getting off a hazard quickly.

There is more than one, front and back
Footage shows a harpoon at the bow and another at the stern, and one player found a second harpoon gun as a loose item. Which one you use changes which way the boat gets pulled.

The two pulling modes

Rapid Mode and Slow Mode are the official names
Hotfix #6 added “two harpoon-pulling modes: Rapid Mode and Slow Mode” and fixed issues with additional harpoon modules. A later patch fixed harpoon slots. These are the developer’s words, not a community nickname.

Space switches modes, R reloads
One creator narrated the controls as he found them: fire, then R to reload, and Space to switch between slow and rapid mode. Another can be heard calling “switch to rapid mode” mid-manoeuvre, so the swap matters in practice.

The pull ramps up instead of snapping
Hotfix #5 added “a gradual ramp-up to the harpoon pulling force” for smoother movement, and Hotfix #1 fixed harpoons being violently launched when retracted. If you watch old footage and the harpoon looks wilder than yours, that is why.
Not confirmed
The Space and R bindings come from one creator’s demo run, not from a published control list. The demo had no controller support and the release build does, so bindings may well have moved. Treat them as a starting point.
The mistake that costs you ten minutes
A fired harpoon anchors you in place
A four-player crew came to a dead stop and started debugging the engine — was it on, had someone turned it off, should they try switching it off and on again. The actual cause: a teammate had fired the harpoon and it was still attached. “No wonder we can’t move. You shot the harpoon.”
If the boat will not move, check the harpoons before you check the engine. Nothing on screen shouts that you are tethered.

Why it is a two-person job
Whoever is on the harpoon is not at the helm, and the two have to agree. The harpoon pulls toward a fixed point while the engine pushes forward; used together they rotate the boat, used against each other they fight. This is the same shape as everything else here — see why the game wants a crew and what else is on the boat.
Harpoon questions
+How does the harpoon work in Water You Doing?
You man a harpoon turret, fire it at something solid, and it winches the boat toward the anchor point. It is a movement and steering tool, not a weapon. Nearly every creator who tried it expected a projectile and was surprised.
+What are Rapid Mode and Slow Mode?
Two harpoon-pulling modes the developer added in Hotfix #6. Rapid pulls hard and fast, Slow pulls gently. One creator's footage shows Space switching between them and R reloading, though that was a demo build and controls may have changed.
+Why won't my boat move in Water You Doing?
Check whether a harpoon is still attached. In one recorded session the crew spent a while troubleshooting the engine before realising a teammate had fired the harpoon and it was still anchoring them in place.
+How many harpoons does the boat have?
At least two in the demo — footage shows one at the front and one at the back. Patch notes also refer to harpoon slots and additional harpoon modules, which suggests you can add more, though the module system is not documented.
